2 people arrested in fatal shooting in San José
SAN JOSE (BCN) – San Jose Police arrested two men in a fatal shooting Thursday that occurred just one block from last week’s deadly shooting at a maintenance facility in the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.
Eric Zarate, 43, and Michael Herrera, 34, were arrested for the shooting reported Thursday at 1:50 p.m. in the area of North San Pedro and West Hedding streets.
Officers saw a disturbance in the area and found a man with at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene and identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office as 20-year-old Malik Johnson.
Santa Clara County Sheriff’s officers and deputies found and arrested Zarate and Herrera at the scene. The motive for the fatal shooting, the 18th homicide in San José in 2021, is under investigation, police said.
The proximity of the shooting to the VTA facility, where a VTA employee on May 26 shot and killed nine of his colleagues, then himself in the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the region of the bay, prompted a statement from State Senator Dave Cortese, D-San José.
“While our community is still reeling from last week’s horrific shooting, we again experience shock and deep sorrow,” Cortese said. “This is just another indication that meaningful steps need to be taken to strengthen and expand California laws to prevent this type of violence and I pledge to take whatever steps are necessary to protect our community.” It cannot continue to happen.
