MARANA TIGERS

2021 RECORD: 7-3

  • After a successful first season under coach Philip Stewart, Marana will be motivated to reach the playoffs after failing last season despite going 7-3. Tigers fire two of state’s most prolific offensive players as seniors — quarterback Elijah Joplin and receiver sat Chestnut.
  • The battle for the boot, won last year by Marana at home against neighborhood rival Mountain View, will resume in the fall in the season opener Sept. 2 in Mountain View. The Tigers’ win ended a 10-game losing streak against the Mountain Lions. The boot battle was halted for six years when a fight in the stands during the 2014 game forced the Marana School District to suspend the series.
  • Marana’s other out-of-region games include a few long trips to Buena (September 9) and Cienega (October 7) as well as two home games against two other quality opponents – a very experienced CDO team (September 23) and a class team 6A from Mesa Westwood (Sept. 30) who finished 6-4 last season.
  • Marana plays three of his five 5A Sonoran games at home, including a game against Sunnyside on October 21. The teams had a classic game last fall at Marana when the Tigers rallied from a three-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter to win 36-35 behind Joplin’s 398 yards.
