SPRING CITY, Tennessee – Defending champion Barry Goodman of Spring City, TN must not have shaved on Saturday night, as he won the 25-lap Late Model Feature Race at Mountain View Raceway by a mustache while driving the Charlie’s Used Auto Parts CVR. Goodman strengthened his lead in the points standings with his third win of the season.
Goodman and Ruben Mayfield of Lenoir City, TN fought side by side for the lead on the final lap of the race after a warning flag. Mayfield drove under Goodman in turns one and two to take the lead. Mayfield and Goodman ran side-to-side in the back stretch, but Goodman got an outside run after the fourth turn and beat Mayfield by inches at the checkered flag.
Goodman’s margin of victory at the checkered flag was 0.093 seconds. Mayfield had to place second in the RM Trucking Stinger, and Michael Smith of Crossville, TN was third in the Spin City Studio Longhorn. Michael Evans of Chattanooga, TN was fourth behind the wheel of the Evans Racing Special. Brian Selby of Sparta, TN completed the top five of the Selby Racing Special.
In the preliminary action, Goodman was also the quick qualifier among 16 entrants with a lap around the ¼ mile elevated clay oval in 11.072 seconds to claim pole position for the 25-lap Main Event. Goodman took the lead early in the race, followed by Smith, Jordan Rodabaugh of Soddy Daisy, TN in the Orr Brothers Construction Kryptonite, Mayfield and Selby.
Mayfield fell back to sixth, as Selby moved up to fourth in round three, and Tim Ladd of Clinton, TN, took fifth place in round four. Mayfield regained fifth place on lap five, overtaking Ladd in the Ladd Racing Special.
The first of six warning flags came out on lap six when Shannon Elrod of Baxter, TN spun the Elrod Racing Rocket on lap four. Goodman led Smith, Rodabaugh, Selby and Mayfield down for the reboot. After two more restarts, Mayfield got busy and passed Selby for fourth place after a ninth round restart.
On lap 13, Mayfield got the inside line over Rodabaugh, and they ran side-to-side for two laps before Mayfield clinched third from the fourth corner on lap 15. Ladd spun on lap four on lap 21 to pull out the fourth caution flag. During the warning period, Rodabaugh broke a brake line and spilled brake fluid on most of the race track.
When the green light signaled the return of the peloton to the race, Mayfield moved over to Smith to take second place. With Goodman firmly in the lead, he took the white flag to signal a lap to go, but that was replaced by the warning flag when Mike Bishop of Decatur, TN rigged his Bishop Racing Special into the second turn.
This set up a one-lap sprint to the finish, and the green and white flags were displayed simultaneously. Mayfield got inside Goodman in turn one and two leaders made contact. Goodman kept the fire lit in his orange, yellow and blue dayglo machine and stayed alongside Mayfield in the home stretch. Goodman got a better run at the fourth corner to reach the finish line first.
