Hilton San Francisco Union Square to reopen after COVID-19 shutdown – NBC Bay Area
California’s largest hotel is about to reopen.
For most of the past year, a large heart has been illuminated on the main tower of the Hilton San Francisco. Like a kind of love letter to the city during the pandemic.
But in recent days, a series of figures has taken its place. The numbers represented the countdown to reopening.
“We’re counting down to our big day tomorrow, so, 5,4,3,2 and tonight we’re going to say One and tomorrow we’re opening our doors,” said Terry Lewis, Managing Director of Hilton Union Square .
In the past two weeks, employees have returned to work after being laid off for 14 months.
Lewis told NBC Bay Area on Sunday that it was moving to say hello to so many staff after not seeing them for so long.
“The first group that came, when I started talking, and I had tears in my eyes, because it was happy to see their faces,” she said.
With approximately 2,000 rooms, the Hilton San Francisco is the largest hotel west of Las Vegas.
So reopening is a big deal for downtown San Francisco, especially for businesses that survive on customer catering.
“We are looking forward to it. We applaud their opening. It will bring a little more traffic here,” said Ranjan Dey, owner of the New Delhi restaurant.
Dey reopened his restaurant about six weeks ago and has survived serving customers who are typically from the Bay Area. He recovers about 18% of the income he used to bring in. But there are still several other hotels in Union Square and downtown San Francisco that remain closed.
San Francisco Supervisor Matt Haney said the reopening of the Hilton is an important step as the city seeks to return to normalcy.
“This is the biggest hotel in California. For them to say, we reopen, we are ready. We can do it safely and we think people want to come back, I think that will mean all the other hotels that follow costume, ”he said.
According to Lewis, demand appears to be strong with Hilton who she says is well booked over Memorial Day weekend.
