ST. GEORGE – There will only be two parks where people can legally set off fireworks in the town of Ivins for the July holidays.
Ivins City Council formalized this at its meeting last Thursday, designating portions of land for the three combined baseball fields of Ivins City Park – also known as Center Street Park – and UNITY Park as the only places where the fireworks will be allowed in the city in July. Fireworks will be banned everywhere else in Ivins. See the map here.
The sites were decided by city manager Dale Coulam and Santa Clara / Ivins Fire and Rescue in an attempt to reduce legal locations for setting off fireworks, citing increased fire danger due to the current drought.
As far as they were concerned, using only the earth fields would be ideal for reducing potential hot spots for the fire department for both Independence Day and Pioneer Day.
“As dry as we are, we have to make sure it’s just dirt,” Coulam said at Thursday’s meeting, where the board unanimously approved the order 5-0. “It will be a little easier to patrol for the fire department. Instead of having to drive through town, they can just cover both parks and be responsive to any fire that might ignite. “
Last month, the town of St. George announced it would limit the use of fireworks to its 16 city parks.
Santa Clara / Ivins Fire Chief Randy Hancey said the department was particularly concerned about patches of dry vegetation throughout the city and even bamboo areas near parks as potential spots that would be ignited by the red glow from a stray rocket on July 4.
“Our concern is that they are shooting antennas, and there is dry brush nearby, so we are limiting them to the ball fields so that they are as far away as possible.”
Fireworks will only be permitted on baseball diamonds July 2-5 and July 22-25 in both parks.
Coincidentally, the Ivins Fire Station sits along the first base line of the baseball field in Ivins City Park.
Sentierre Resort is reducing its size
In other business at its meeting last Thursday, the Ivins City Council unanimously approved Coulam to consider a scaled-down development proposal for the Sentierre Padre Canyon Resort which is planned just south of the Tuacahn Center. for the Arts.
When proposed in 2016, the resort was presented to council as a five-star resort with multi-story buildings.
The developers told the council on Thursday that with some funding failure, the resort was scaling back its plans, including eliminating all but one multi-story buildings and keeping nearly all of the complex in a one-story facility. with an underground garage.
The board asked Coulam to review the proposal before it was approved or denied by the board at a future meeting.
