A knife-wielding man at a San Jose elementary school was arrested Wednesday afternoon after talking and negotiating with authorities for several hours, police said.

No injuries were reported in the incident at Empire Gardens Elementary School and no students were in danger, San Jose Police Sgt. says Christian Camarillo.

“Everybody come home safe tonight,” Camarillo said.

Police arrived at the school just before 11 a.m. to investigate a report of a despondent man with a knife on campus. Police said they had “confined” the person and were talking and negotiating with him.

People on campus sheltered in place during the incident, police said.

At around 1:40 p.m., police announced that the suspect had been taken into custody.

“There will be an assessment of that individual to see what type of crisis they are in and then get them the appropriate help and treatment,” Camarillo said.
