Merced man dies in DUI collision in Keyes area, CHP reports
A man from Merced died of his injuries after an accident on Saturday night east of Keyes, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The two-car collision occurred at approximately 10:10 p.m. on East Keyes Road at the intersection of Mountain View Road.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the Merced man, Jose M. Reyes Morales, was arrested on Mountain View heading south at the intersection stop sign. Driving a 2009 Toyota Camry, he embarked on a westbound 1998 Toyota 4Runner path on Keyes Road, driven by Favio Valencia Jr. of Patterson, CHP reported. There is no stop sign on Keyes Road at the intersection.
The Camry was struck on the driver’s side and Reyes had to be extricated from the car. He died at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
Valencia was also taken to the Memorial. The CHP classified his injuries as minor. The ages of the men were not available.
The collision is still under investigation and Reyes’ alcohol consumption appears to have been a factor, CHP reported.
The collision press release said nearly 30 people in the United States die in impaired driving crashes every day. “That’s one person every 50 minutes, killing more than 10,000 per year, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics from 2018.”
