SAN JOSE, California, September 19, 2021 / PRNewswire-PRWeb / – Back to the Winner’s Circle! Monster Energy congratulates Phil davis beating Yoel Romero in the front page fight at Bellator 266 within the SAP Center in San jose, california, Saturday evening. In the Main Event bout, the 36-year-old light heavyweight fighter from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, went the distance to claim the split decision victory (30-27, 28-29, 30-26), spoiling Romero’s top-tier debut in the Bellator promotion.
Bellator 266 – Davis v Romero was contested in front of an energetic crowd at the SAP Center in San jose, california. The main card was broadcast on Showtime and the preliminaries presented by Monster Energy broadcast live on YouTube.
The main bout marked the expected Bellator MMA debut of Cuban professional mixed martial artist Romero (13-6 MMA). The 44-year-old is a former Olympic wrestler and three-time Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) title challenger with a penchant for victories by knockout or technical knockout via punches.
Monster Energy’s Davis (23-6 MMA) entered the Octagon in search of a win after losing to the current division champion Vadim Nemkov in the quarter-finals of the Bellator World Light Heavyweight Championship in April 2021. In his favor, Davis had never lost a fight at the SAP Center in San jose and went undefeated in four bouts at the site, seeking to extend the record against Romero.
The fight began with a tense first round in which both opponents tried to find openings for strikes and kicks in the legs. Romero moved slowly and arrhythmically, but always ready to explode in his strikes and powerful combos, while Davis stayed on the sidelines and landed calculated punches.
In round 2, Davis had to absorb some heavy shots from Romero but managed to change the dynamic midway through: with Romero swaying wildly, Davis picked up the tempo and unleashed a big punch to the head that visibly hurt. knocked out his opponent. Using momentum, he obtained the first (massive) takedown from combat just before the end of the turn.
In the third and final round, Davis put the “mixed” in mixed martial arts and doubled his fight. Repeatedly taking the bout on the ground, he dismantled the Cuban Olympic silver medalist with precise eliminations – a total of five throughout the bout – and followed it up with both ground and pound penalties. In the end, Davis’s ground control and heavy hitting took the victory by split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-26).
“You have to use wrestling. God bless wrestling, the best sport in the world!” Davis said after winning the main fight at Bellator 266. Speaking about his opponent, Davis said, “Dude, he’s a monster. I’ve felt that power more times than I would have liked this. evening.”
Davis successfully ruined Romero’s debut in the Bellator franchise, perhaps to the disappointment of some SAP Center fans who had favored the Cuban. “I don’t hear everyone clapping the other guy too often. It was good to be the bad guy for a while,” Davis said after the fight.
Saturday night’s win brings Davis back to the winner’s circle with a Bellator MMA record of 10 wins, 3 losses. Davis, who trains with Alliance MMA, became the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Champion in 2016 and held the title until 2017. Stay tuned for Mr. Wonderful’s next fight!
