Newly Completed Development Will Provide 100% Affordable Housing In San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) – San Francisco city officials on Thursday celebrated the grand opening of a new $ 60.4 million seven-story apartment complex in the Mission neighborhood to provide affordable housing 100 %.
Avanza 490, located at 490 S. Van Ness Ave., consists of 80 permanently affordable housing units, 32 of which are reserved for residents of the Mission District or those who live within half a mile of the building.
Facilities inside the new building include a children’s play area on the second floor, a community room and a laundry room.
In addition, the ground floor of the building includes a 636 square foot commercial space that will be used by several local non-profit organizations. Currently, an agreement is being finalized with the organization Asociacion Mayab to use the space in the service of the Mayan speaking community.
The Mayor of London Breed, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, praised the newly completed project.
“It’s projects like this that will help us meet our housing goals and make San Francisco a more affordable place to live. If we want our city to continue to be the diverse place it is today, we need to do a better job of building housing for working families, ”Breed said in a statement.
The site was once a gas station and after being identified by city and community leaders as a potential site for new affordable housing, the Mayor’s Office for Housing and Community Development decided to purchase it. in 2015.
“When this plot was offered for luxury development in 2015, the community put their foot down and demanded that the city buy it instead,” said supervisor Hillary Ronen, whose district includes the Mission. .
“Thanks to this successful partnership between the community and the town hall, we welcome low-income families and workers to their new, always affordable homes,” she said.
The new housing was made possible through a partnership between the Mayor’s office and Bridge Housing and Mission Housing Development Corporation.
When Avanza 490 first opened in 2018, it was the first new affordable housing project in the mission in 10 years. Currently, seven new 100% affordable housing projects in the Mission are either under construction or already open or set to open within the next 18 months, city officials said.
