The score of the box SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Alex Reelfs pitched more than a career-high seven innings and combined with starter Nick Sando and reliever Jared Feikes to hold Cal Poly to just one run as Santa Clara cruised to a 9- 1 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Stephen Schott Stadium.

Santa Clara took a 5-0 lead in the first two innings and took the win, improving to 22-17 for the year and avenging a 15-6 loss to the Mustangs four weeks ago at the Baggett Stadium.

Cal Poly, who has not been shut out yet this season, is down to 24-16.

Santa Clara drove in three doubles for two runs in the first inning and added three more runs in the second on a two-run double by Dawson Brigman and an RBI groundout.

The Broncos retired with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings and two more in the eighth.

Cal Poly scored their only point in the eighth as Ryan Stafford picked and went home on two errors from Santa Clara.

Stafford and Samuelson each had two of Cal Poly’s seven hits. Santa Clara’s 12 hits included a double and two singles from Brigman and two hits each from Matt Jew and Cal Christofori.

Reelfs (4-5) allowed one unearned run and six hits in seven scoreless innings and six strikeouts.

The loss was blamed on left-handed Mustang Noah Larkin (2-3) as he allowed two runs and four hits in the first inning with one strikeout.

Cal Poly heads home for its next two Big West conference series, starting with first-place finisher UC Santa Barbara Friday night at 6 p.m.
