WSU baseball drops fourth straight road game | Sports
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — A change of scenery certainly didn’t work for Washington State’s baseball team. The Cougars were still struggling to find an offensive rhythm Wednesday.
Santa Clara busted for eight mid-inning runs and limited Washington State to just six hits as the Broncos rebounded the Cougars 9-2 in a non-conference game at Schott Stadium.
Matt Jew went 2 for 5 with a double and four RBIs for Santa Clara (12-7). Michael O’Hara was 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Efrain Manzo went 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Robert Hipwell added a two-run homer in the fourth.
Sophomore outfielder Bryce Matthews went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Washington State (9-11), which has lost four straight and was beaten in this one 11-6. Freshman infielder Ethan Hainline went 2 for 4.
Alex Reelfs (2-3) picked up the win. He allowed four hits, a walk and two runs, both earned, in six innings. Reelfs struck out 10. Cade Pilchard worked the last three innings, allowing two hits and two walks, striking out three for his first save of the season.
Second-year right-hander Elias Farland (0-2) took the loss, allowing a hit, two walks and three runs, all earned in 1¾ innings. He withdrew five.
Jew had an RBI single with one out to put Santa Clara ahead 1-0 in the first.
The Cougars replied in the top of the third with two outs. Second-year infielder Kyle Russell and senior infielder Jack Smith each singled out to right field to set up Matthews, who doubled on the left to put Washington State ahead 2-1 .
However, the Broncos had five fourth-inning runs to take the lead for good. Hoipwell started with his first homer of the season. Two outs later, a walk and two singles loaded the bases for Jew, who unloaded them with a double to left center that made it 6-2 at Santa Clara.
The Broncos collected three more in the fifth to ice it.
Washington State continues its road trip with a three-game series starting at 6:05 p.m. Friday at Stanford.
